Relaxing in onsen in Atami is a luxurious experience that draws visitors from near and far. For guests wanting a private experience, these Atami ryokan with private onsen are on my bucket list of places to stay, at least once in my life, in Atami. 

Atami is a historic hot spring town on Japan’s Izu Peninsula. It’s known for its beautiful ocean views, relaxing onsen baths, and traditional hotels and ryokan. Once a glamorous getaway from Tokyo during the Japanese bubble era in the 1970’s and 1980’s, many grand hotels and ryokan from that era are still operating today. Now, they present retro charm together with modern comforts and 5-star Japanese omotenashi hospitality.

1. Atami Izusan Karaku

Atami Izusan Karaku is a highly-rated luxury ryokan set on the north side of Atami. This ryokan is recognized by the Michelin Guide, and holds the distinction of being one of the few Michelin Key hotels in the world – talk about bucket-list-worthy!

Furuya Ryokan has been welcoming guests since 1806, making it the oldest ryokan in Atami. That by itself should put it at the top of everyone’s Atami ryokan bucket list, but that’s not all. Throughout the property you’ll find glimpses of its long history, from displays of traditional woodblock prints to the oldest radio in Japan, all showcased in their museum-like lobby. 

Rooms here are all Japanese-style, featuring tatami mats and futon beds. Many rooms here offer private onsen attached, fed by Atami’s natural hot spring waters. Guests can also enjoy public indoor and outdoor onsen on-site as well. 

Kaiseki multi-course meals are served directly in-room here, with the option to add indulgent extras like sashimi boats.

Furuya Ryokan is also located in the heart of Atami, just a two-minute walk from Atami Sun Beach and Atami Ginza shopping street, making it a great home base for exploring the rest of Izu Peninsula.

3. Fufu Atami

Fufu Atami is an exclusive ryokan that’s high on my bucket list of Atami ryokan with private onsen. It’s part of the prestigious Fufu hotel group, and many of its sister properties have also earned Michelin Keys, including two keys for Fufu Kawaguchiko and Fufu Nikko, and one each for Fufu Hakone, Fufu Karuizawa, and Fufu Kyoto.

Watei Kazekomichi, or WA亭 風こみち in Japanese is a beautiful traditional ryokan in Atami that offers guests an intimate and personalized stay. With only eight rooms, this top-rated boutique property should be on everyone’s Japanese ryokan bucket list! 

The spacious rooms here include a separate living area, with a choice of bedding between Japanese-style futon beds or Western-style raised beds. Every room here also comes with a private onsen, either outdoors on the balcony, or semi-outdoors in a separate bathroom. 

Guests here are welcomed with complimentary tea and Japanese sweets, and can try kaiseki meals during their stay.

5. Atami Sekaie

Atami Sekaie is a stunning ryokan in northern Atami, located high above the coastline. All of the rooms here offer beautiful views of the surrounding hills, Atami city, and the ocean. 

The interiors at Atami Sekaie are sleek and contemporary, blended with Japanese aesthetics and craftsmanship. Every room at this ryokan has its own private onsen, making it a perfect location for an Atami onsen getaway. All rooms here are western-style and have comfortable living spaces and spacious terraces overlooking Sagami Bay.
